Read on….

What you must do is to consider a careful approach to your routine and you’ll soon see that smoother skin and good looks coming through after a shave.

Let’s get one question out of the way first:

Does shaving cause acne? The straight answer is no – that’s one of those urban myths.  It’s not the shaving itself that causes acne, but the repercussions from not focusing on before and aftercare MAY be contributing factors, or at the least not be helping your skin.

Read our tips below, consider the content and get yourself into a mindful shaving routing – one that navigates your spots and acne rather than blindly dragging a razor over your face.

Tip 1:  Soften your skin and loosen your facial hair

It’s vital to wash and hydrate your skin before you consider shaving. This is the very first step you must master. Wash your face with warm water or drape a towel drenched in warm water and allow it to sit on your face for at least 3 minutes. This is the best way to prep your skin and that loosen those hair follicles before moving forward.

If you have time wrap a warm towel around your face to soft your beard before your shave.

Tip 2:  Lather up to get a close shave without irritating your skin

It is recommended that you lather up with a shaving cream that is rich and moisturising. Massage it onto your face with clean hands using a similar motion as if you were washing your face. You could choose to use a brush to apply the shaving cream. If you do use your hands, make sure they are clean or you might end up transferring bacteria to your face.

Tip 3:  Choose the right razor

There is a wide range of razors in the market, and it can be daunting to select the right one, be look for one meant for acne-prone skin and stay away from those you know will make the acne worse.

We suggest you look at razors with disposable cartridges.  It might take you a little time to get used to it but the disposable cartridges help minimise the risk of bacteria build-up, and you can simply toss the blade out when it’s time for a new one. You should get between a week and a month depending on how often use shave and the coarseness of your facial hair.

Look for a brand that is affordable and yet offers you great quality.

Electric razors are effective and can help to reduce the risk of razor burns and cuts. Nevertheless, choosing the right electric razor can take some time but if you go to a specialist shop or department store personal care section they should have some sales staff that can help you choose a model suitable for your skin type.  Take time to select carefully as normally unless there is fault with your electric razor it’s unlikely you can return it.

Cost might be a factor for you. No doubt electric razors mean an up front cost but disposal razors can add up over time.

Tip 4:  Have a sharp blade

Whilst you might be scared of using a sharp blade when you have spots, pimples and acne you really do need one to ensure a clean shave that doesn’t tug and pull your hair and skin, which may cuase irritation and ingrowing hairs.

Tip 5:  Shave with the grain

To minimise damage from shaving ensure you shave with the grain first. It’s best to avoid going against the grain as this is much harsher on the skin and may cause irritation. If you’re not happy with the results first time around you can always take care shave against the grain in the second round, but make sure you apply another round of the shaving cream before the second round. Pull your skin taut and only go over against the growth in necessary areas.

Tip 6:  Take your time – don’t rush

If at al possible plan your shaving routine so you don’t have to rush the process – even if that means getting up half an hour earlier.  Some of you will be lucky enough to not have to shave every day – so do so when you have time – perhaps making sure one of your shaves is at the weekend or on your day off.  Take your time and give your skin some attention and care. Looking after yourself is great for your mental health too.

Tip 7:  Men’s skincare is under-rated!

It’s time we normalise men’s skincare!

Shaving reveals new layers of the skin that are sensitive and are damaged easily. At this time your skin can be prevented from performing its natural barrier function. Therefore, include a post-shave balm or lotion in your routine.

  • Use products that are meant for sensitive skin types
  • Make sure they DO NOT contain ingredients that may flare up your acne
  • Make it a point to learn the ingredients that are not suitable for acne
  • If you can use products which are unscented
  • Don’t go by just reviews and prices learn what suits your skin type
  • Pick products that have fewer ingredients and are natural
  • Avoid layering too many products, you never know which combination might react
